In 2010 Studio Ghibli released a movie called The Borrower Arrietty. It’s based on Mary Norton’s series of books, The Borrowers. The story is about tiny people who live in our world behind the walls and under the floorboards of every house. This story is specifically about Arrietty, a young “borrower” girl who is found by a big person. The plot thickens from there!
Well the UK trailer for the movie has just been released and the title has been shortened to just Arrietty. This is the first trailer with the English speaking cast, which consists of Saoirse Ronan, Mark Strong, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett and Carol Burnett.
The movie looks beautiful like all Studio Ghibli movies these days, and seems to be drawn much more in the style of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
I’d like to believe that the whole little people world came about as follows: Tom Thumb met up with Thumbelina and they had some tiny babies, then their babies spread out and had more babies and they created the whole tiny world of people we see in the trailer below. Oh and incest isnt a big deal with little people, if anything it makes their next generations strong… or not.
Either way check out UK trailer below!
Right now the movie is scheduled for a February 2012 release in North America. February couldn’t come sooner because I need to get my Ghibli fix! Maybe this Ghibli movie will actually make money over here in theaters, but I highly doubt it because General Audiences in American seem to have a harder time enjoying Anime over our own style of animation.
Either way, the movie looks pretty cool, top notch like all of Ghibli’s movies.
